Member Spotlight May 2013
Carolyn Poling Schriber has a PhD in History from the University of
Colorado, where she studied medieval Europe and 19th-century America. And as a
tenured professor at Rhodes College specializing in medieval history, Carolyn published extensively on relationships between Anglo-Norman bishops and kings
in the twelfth century. After attaining ‘Professor Emerita’ status, she ‘retired’
and focussed her attention on her second love, the history of America's Civil
War, and fortunately for readers of the genre, Carolyn also focussed on her
writing.
Her first published works, A Scratch with the Rebels and Beyond
All Price, are both been set in South Carolina during the northern
occupation of the Low Country. A Scratch with the Rebels illuminates
the depth and diversity of perspectives from ordinary soldiers on both sides of
the conflict while Beyond All Price tells the story of Nellie
Chase, who served as matron and nurse in the Roundhead Regiment from
Pennsylvania. Nellie fought her own series of wars, against an abusive husband,
a vengeful Presbyterian minister, nineteenth-century attitudes toward women who
lacked the protection of family status, and ultimately, against a foe more
lethal than war itself.

In 2012, Carolyn released four more books including The Road to Frogmore, Left by the Side of the Road (Volume I of Short Stories) and her first piece of nonfiction on
what she calls the "thickets of self-publishing." The
Second Mouse Gets the Cheese originated as a series of blog posts that
documented Carolyn's journey into self-publishing. Along that path, she managed
to accrue awards for her writing from the Military Writers Society of America
(2011 and 2012) and was listed among the top 100 Amazon Bestsellers in
Historical Fiction.
There are more books
in the works, to be released under her imprint, Katzenhaus Books, including a second edition of her volume of short stories, an interactive
children’s book about a rebellious teddy bear, and a romantic novel about a
mixed couple (one ‘North’, one ‘South’) as they face the challenges of the
Civil War.
Carolyn and her husband live in Tennessee. You can connect with her on her website, her blog, and on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Carolyn’s
books are available at all major online retailers including Amazon.com.
